“It is this policy that Burger King ran afoul of this month with its “Whopper Sacrifice” campaign, which offered a free hamburger to anyone who severed the sacred bonds with 10 of the friends they had accumulated on Facebook. Facebook suspended the program because Burger King was sending notifications to the castoffs letting them know they’d been dropped for a sandwich (or, more accurately, a tenth of a sandwich).” —Too Many Online Friends? Women's Health - Get Yr Libido On!

A few weeks ago I attended an Herbalism class @ the Action Center in Wilmington, NC. The discussion of the night was all about getting your libido on balance with the help of herbs. Kathryn teaches the class and she is very friendly and makes you feel really comfortable talking about women’s health. I took some notes so that I could share the knowledge.

Oatstraw (avena sativa) is a relaxing herb with libido effects. It contains calming minerals and is high in calcium, magnesium, selenium and zinc. It helps nerves and improves the circulation of blood. It has a balancing effect on hormones. The reason it is used for libido is because of its relaxing effect which helps to lessen anxiety. It works best when used as an infusion and is a good winter crop. Oatstraw is best used long term to have a greater effect.

Maca
(lepidium meyenii) is a root used to increase energy and supports the immune system and hormone balance. Maca is best used long term to have a greater effect.

Kava Kava (piper methsyticum) is used to help revive a diminished sex drive by reducing anxiety and heightening sensation. This herb sounds the most appealing to me as it produces a mildly euphoric feeling. It is best to take in relaxing settings where you will feel comfortable. Taking too much can cause dry mouth and dry skin, and withdrawal symptoms can also occur. Based on Kathryn’s experiences with Kava Kava (she’s taken it for years!) she suggested that tinctures are the best form. My dad gave me a bag of Kava Kava powder to mix in with my drinks, and it is not very tastey.

Damiana (turnera diffusa) increases circulation to the genital area and strengthens the muscles. It is best for long term use so that your body gets used to it, but it is also great to use just before engaging in intimate play. Believe me, my girlfriend has been taking it and it works. The suggested dose is to take it throughout the day. Though it can interfere with the absorption of iron & blood sugar. It is also good for depression. Unfortunately, Damiana is native to Central and South America and does not grow here, but Kathryn said you can buy it online and make your own infusions.

Speaking of infusions, Kathryn recently taught a class on how to make infusions that I unfortunately missed. Her next herbal class is about Mental Health and Stress Relief next Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30pm at the Community Action Center. Check it out if you are in the Wilmington area! changes in the whitehouse.gov

queero:

Earlier this week we witnessed history when Barack Obama was sworn in as America’s 44th President. With a new President also comes a new website and it’s definitely apparent that things are going to change, at least when technology is concerned.

Take a look at what whitehouse.gov looked like when Bush was in office (yeah, I never went to that website when he was in office either):

Now, look at the extreme makeover the Obama team has made. Their transition from change.gov to the whitehouse.gov is surprisingly seamless.

So what does this have to do with being gay?

This is the first time in history that support for the LGBT community has been included in a President’s agenda. Let’s hope that Obama keeps his word and let’s hold him accountable for it.

What did you think of the final frontier of the L Word?

queero:

This past weekend the Rainbow Factory hosted the first L Word party, here is what we thought about the first episode:

babe useless: Oh my god, I can’t believe I’m still watching this show. At least I know Jenny dies! Yay!

teknacolorninja: It was all “catch up” and predictable. Although, I’d like to know if Shane will ever get Molly’s letter…you can count on Jenny
to put it in the attic!?

Bizzzle
: I’ve only got a one word review, disappointment. The drama will bring me back next week though.

scantron: Is it over yet?? and why am I still watching it? Can Nikki please not be in any more episodes now?

whiskeycat
: I didn’t see it but I heard jenny dies. I thought she was annoying. I hope they don’t bring back her ghost. Shane and Alice are still hot.

Tell us what you think in a comment below, and if you live in the Wilmington area be sure to join us again next Sunday 8:30 @ the Rainbow Factory, be there and be square.
